Thanksgiving Day Traditions

Thanksgiving Traditions, family

I cannot believe tomorrow is Thanksgiving!  In honor of tomorrow's festivities, I am sharing some of my family's favorite Thanksgiving Day traditions:

1.  Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
I love watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade while cooking with my parents.  It is so much fun watching all the floats and performances.  The parade is a must each year!

2.  Prep, Snack, Cook
We have a Southern-style Thanksgiving dinner at my parents' house and the whole family comes over.  My mom and I spend all day slaving away in the kitchen prepping, snacking and cooking during the hours leading up to dinner.  My mom is a phenomenal cook!  A few of our favorite annual Thanksgiving dishes are as follows: fried turkey, dressing, hash brown casserole, turnip greens, cornbread, sweet potato casserole and mom's famous chocolate chip cheesecake, among many other yummy things.

3.  Cocktail Hour
We always have a great bar set up with happy hour beginning around 3:00 p.m.  You can find anything from daiquiris to margaritas to wine, and this year my dad is introducing a fabulous pineapple martini to the lineup...

4.  Scrabble
Maybe it's because we are all a bunch of nerds, but we have several games of Scrabble each year and it gets pretty intense.

5.  Feast of Leftovers, then decorate Christmas tree
Thanksgiving leftovers are the best, and on Friday night, my parents, brother and I have a "feast of leftovers" at my parents' house, then decorate their Christmas tree while listening to Christmas music.  It's nice to relax and shift gears into the Christmas spirit.  I cannot put a Christmas tree up at my house because my puppy would destroy it...

New Tradition
I came across a really awesome Thanksgiving tradition on Facebook the other day and have to share it since I am an extreme animal lover.  Basically, this lady shops for animal supplies on Black Friday and takes them to a local animal shelter.  As if that were not enough, she volunteers at the shelter on Thanksgiving Day.  What an amazing lady- I absolutely love this idea!  If you happen to come across any animal toys and supplies while you are out doing your Black Friday shopping, please consider purchasing some items for your local shelter.

What are your favorite Thanksgiving Day traditions??  Thanks so much for stopping by!  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

  1. One of my favorite traditions is watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade too! I love the idea of picking up items for a local animal shelter, I definitely need to keep that in mind on Friday. Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels :)
