What to Expect the First Day of Law School

BaubleBar Courtney Bib, Lawyer Fashion Blog

I love hearing from readers!  One of my sweet readers is about to start law school and emailed me asking what to expect for the first day.  I will do my best to answer that question in today's post.
The first day of law school is a nerve-racking experience.  The days and weeks leading up to day one are filled with anxiety and the fear of the unknown.  What will your professors be like?  Do they really expect you to read, brief and actually understand everything on the syllabus before you step foot inside the classroom? What should you wear??  What all do you need to bring to class??  So many questions...

What I remember about my first day of law school...

First Day of Law School
We had orientation beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the big auditorium.  Our class started with 120 students and there were no extra seats.  Everyone was nervous and had no idea what to expect.  We had several hours of speakers, vendors and other sales pitches before our first-ever lecture.  By this point, our eyes were totally glazed over and we were wondering what we had gotten ourselves into and if it was too late to turn back. Fortunately, our professor did not call on anyone to brief.  Although, he asked for volunteers, at which point a majority of the class looked down and avoided eye contact at all costs.
Spoiler alert: professors expect you to read every assignment prior to day one and to be ready to brief if called on. Some are understanding and know that you have absolutely no clue what you doing as a new 1L, but others get a thrill out of humiliating new students.

What I Wore For My First Day of Law School
As far as what I wore, I kept my outfit simple on day one.  I wore jeans, a white button-down and heels (see above).  Wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident, but steer clear of any bright colors or patterns, unless you want to stand up and brief each lecture...  This happened to me 3 weeks in a row in 1L Criminal Law, so I started wearing mostly black to avoid standing out and that worked. Ha!

What I took to Class
What I took to class on day 1: my laptop, planner, syllabus, a notepad and pen/highlighter, case printouts along with textbooks, and my Tervis.  After the first couple of weeks, I rarely brought my textbooks with me because they weighed so much (plus, you don't have time to open them because you are so busy frantically taking notes). I recommend recording your first few lectures so you can go back and make sure you don't miss anything important.  You can take a tape recorder, or, record it on your computer.

Looking back, day one was not so scary.  The fear of the unknown and having absolutely no idea what to expect is the worst part, but after a few classes, you will have a routine down.

I hope that helps!  Best of luck to all the new 1Ls out there- it will fly by!  Thanks so much for stopping by!

  1. You look so chic! Good info for those going into it. I work at a university with maters students and there is always anxiety.
