SWEATER: Nordstrom | PANTS: Similar | CLUTCH: Clare V. | SUNNIES: Forever 21 | LIPSTICK: Mac

Happy week of Thanksgiving!!  I am so excited that Thanksgiving is this week!  We spend the Thanksgiving holiday at my parents' house and the whole family comes over for cocktails, corn hole, and lots of amazing Southern cooking.  This Thanksgiving, I am opting for a cozy casual look.  I love this neutral knit pullover.  Not only does it go with everything, but it is also very comfortable and is sure to hide all that extra turkey. ;-)

Also, if you follow me on Instagram (@lawyerlookbook), you know that I broke my toe pretty badly and injured my foot in several places, which is why I am wearing that lovely orthopedic shoe (crutches not pictured)...  I have been on crutches for three weeks now, and am still not able to walk or drive, but I can stand and put some weight on it.  I have to go back for more x-rays this week.  Being on crutches for the last three weeks has been a nightmare and extremely aggravating (not to mention, has totally cramped my style!), but with Thanksgiving this week, I can't help but to be thankful for otherwise good health.  I am very thankful and fortunate that this is a temporary inconvenience.  What are you thankful for?

5 Podcasts Worth Listening To

Christy Wright's Business Boutique, Dave Ramsey
Christy Wright and I in the VIP lounge

I recently attended Christy Wright's Business Boutique Event as a "VIP" guest, courtesy of the Ramsey Solutions team in Nashville.  The conference was absolutely amazing, and I left feeling so inspired and ready to take on the world!  We heard from so many top-tier speakers, including Christy Wright, Rachel Cruze, Dave Ramsey, and Donald Miller, to name a few.  We also had smaller breakout sessions and got to hear from entrepreneurs from all sorts of industries.  It was so awesome to be in a room of 3,000 women working towards their goals and encouraging and uplifiting one another.  I come from a long line of very strong women and truly believe that women support women.

I am still fired up from the Business Boutique Event, and decided to share five new podcasts worth listening to for today's blog post.  I had the privilege of hearing from the first four speakers below at Business Boutique.  I love listening to motivational and career development podcasts and Ted Talks while I'm getting ready in the morning, and am always on the hunt for new inspiration.  Without further adieu, here they are:

1. Christy Wright's Business Boutique
2. Online Marketing Made Easy With Amy Porterfiled
3. Beth Anne Schwamberger's Brilliant Business Moms
4. Building a Story Brand With Donald Miller
5. Sophia Amoruso's #Girlboss Radio

Thanks so much for stopping by!  I would love to know what you are listening to in the comments below!

What I Learned From Running For Elected Office and Winning

Donald Trump, #TrumpTrain, #MAGA, Ivanka Trump, Lawyer Lookbook
With my family after taking the oath of office.  (All photos snapped on my iPhone).

I am convinced that everyone needs to be involved in the political process whether it be in the form of running for office or volunteering with a political campaign.  I am convinced that if everyone knew just how much work is involved, more people would care and more people would vote for qualified candidates.  With the presidential election happening today (thank goodness), I thought I would share my experience running for elected office.

My Experience Running for Elected Office and Winning
Running for elected office is something I never thought I would do, especially in my twenties.  This past February, an opportunity became available and I decided to take a leap and go for it.  Our incumbent Town Court Clerk resigned two years into his four-year term and the position was vacant.  I was contacted by a lot of people to "throw my name in the hat", but blew it off at first.  I was an attorney in private practice with my brother.  The last thing I wanted to do was run for office, but, even worse, be called a "politician."

The more I thought about this particular position, the more it seemed to be a good career move with my legal background and skill set.  I did a ton of research and spoke with a lot of people about the position.  Everyone I talked to really encouraged me to go for it.  So, I went for it.  Since my predecessor resigned halfway into his term, our Town Council had to immediately appoint an Interim before the next election (which was in August, 2016).  Usually, people spend months deciding whether or not to run for elected office.  I had to make a decision in less than two weeks- which is nuts!  I have been very involved in local politics and have helped on several campaigns, but had no intention of running for anything, at least not at this point in my life.  I applied for the Interim with several other highly qualified applicants, and was granted an interview.

The Interview Process for Interim
The interview felt like a Senate confirmation hearing (ok, maybe not that dramatic, but it was unlike any other job interview I had ever been on!).  I sat at a table facing 7 elected Council members, including our Mayor, and they all threw out questions for about an hour.  To my left, sat our Town HR Director, Town Attorney, Town Manager and several others.  Oh, and interviews were open to the public..  A local newspaper reporter and others were in the audience.  After experiencing that interview, I'm pretty sure I can handle any interview. Fortunately, I was unanimously appointed that night to serve as the Interim through September (2016), and agreed to run for the office in August.  My career changed drastically in a matter of two weeks.  I started serving as the Interim Town Court Clerk in March, then went to Paris less than two weeks later for a trip that had been planned for months.  In the meantime, I had to file my official qualifying papers with the Election Commission, which included getting 50 signatures of registered voters that live in city limits (easier said than done).

The Campaign
I had to hit the ground running and get the word out very early on.  We attended every community event possible.  I sent out letters and had to fundraise so that I could put up signs all around town.  Fortunately, my brother has successfully run for office several times, so he was in charge of the campaign.  He is a genius when it comes to making neighborhood walking lists and targeting key voters to turn them out to vote.  When he ran for office, we spent about eight Saturdays in a row in August knocking on hundreds of doors (which is brutal!!!).  I lucked out and did not have to go door-to-door.

For the most part, I had a positive experience.  Running for office is not something most people get excited about, but we have to have more educated people, more business people, and more women to fill these positions at the local, state and federal level (with that being said, I never vote for someone solely based on gender- I have to agree with the platform and policies).

Be Informed and Go Vote
There are so many countries in which women are not allowed to vote.  In 2016, there is no excuse to not be informed, or, to not vote.  You can Google candidates 24/7 in the comfort of your own home.  You can live-stream just about any meeting and see where candidates stand on issues.  We have so many wonderful freedoms here in America, and the First and Nineteenth Amendments are just a couple.  :-)

5 Ways to Spend Your Lunch Break

1. Catch Up On a Good Book
This is probably my favorite way to spend my lunch break.  Reading is a great way to get my mind off of work, while still being productive and getting my creative juices flowing.  I love to read career development/business books, as well as the occasional chick flick book (my most recent fave).  I am currently reading this book, and this book is next on my queue.

2. Errands
The older I get, the more I truly value my time and how I spend it.  I hate burning my weekend up with pesky must-run errands, such as going to the dry cleaners.  Running one or even several errands throughout the week will free up your weekend to spend time doing things you actually enjoy.  Plus, I always feel better running my repeat errands where I see the same people over and over in my work attire (as opposed to after I work out on the weekend and look gross, haha).

3. Network
I try to do at least one networking lunch each week.  I may meet up with a mentor, go to a seminar, or, meet up with a professional colleague and just pick their brain and find out what advice they have.

4. Call a Friend or Relative
My great-grandmother once had a crocheted pattern that said "Happiness is a Long Distance Phone Call."  I love this and could not agree more!  Calling someone you may not get to talk to all that often can really boost your mood for the rest of the day and make you very productive.

5. Unplug

I am trying very hard to get better at unplugging from all technology (especially social media) during my lunch break and focus on the above numbered items.  I have noticed that when I scroll through my various feeds during lunch, I often feel drained, unfulfilled and unproductive.  I stare at a computer screen all day, so my eyes appreciate any screen breaks.

Thanks so much for stopping by!  How do you spend your lunch break??
