After seeing First Lady Melania Trump's gorgeous ice blue Ralph Lauren Inauguration Day ensemble, I have been on the lookout for all things ice blue.  Beyond political parties and party lines, (my blog is nonpartisan ;-)), I think we can all agree that Ralph Lauren designed an absolutely gorgeous Inauguration Day outfit, and that Melania wore it with so much grace and poise.  I love so many of these ice blue items, especially this ice blue wrap coat (and it's only $30!!).  As an American, I hope that whomever is elected president each election cycle is successful, so that we as a country succeed.  With that being said, if there is one thing I am certain of, I think that we will see a lot of gorgeous outfits over the next four years from the First Lady and Ivanka!

What to Do on Your Day Off

Marilyn Monroe

One of my goals for 2017 is to be more intentional with my days off.  This past year I transitioned from the private sector co-owning a law practice with my brother, to now serving in the public sector (ICYMI: see here and here).  One of the perks of working in the public sector, is enjoying days off for Federal holidays.  The most recent being Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday.  Why not make the most of your days off by planning ahead? Here are a few ideas on ways to spend your days off:

1.  Plan a Weekend Getaway
Why not go somewhere close-by that you have always wanted to explore for the long weekend?  For me, I have thought about going to Savannah, Asheville (to see the Biltmore), or even Lexington.  It doesn't have to be a full-blown vaca-y, but could be an overnight trip, or an extended weekend stay.

2. Be a Tourist in Your Home Town
Similar to #1, you could also play tourist and explore your home town.  Nashville has so many new restaurants and cool areas to explore.  You could start by having brunch at a new local restaurant, then explore some new parts of town, go to a new coffee shop in the afternoon (some of my favorites in Nashville), then end the night with dinner and drinks at a new local restaurant.  There are so many awesome places to explore and this will definitely recharge your batteries and get your creative juices flowing.

3. Polish your CV and LinkedIn
Updating your CV on days off will help keep your professional image current.  Plus, by tweaking it from time to time, you will spend a lot less time whenever you do want to apply for a new position.  You will be glad you took the time to polish it every few months rather than spending hours on it the night before.  Be sure to update your LinkedIn profile as well.

4. Exercise
If you have a day off, you really don't have an excuse to not exercise.  Take your day off and go try out Pure Barre (dying to try this), or any other group class you have been wanting to try.  Take your dog for a long walk.  Spend part of the day getting physical and giving your body a break from the office chair.

5. Get Lost in a Good Book
I love to read, especially books on personal and career development (See my Fifteen Must-Read Career Books for the Modern Professional here).  I have memberships to libraries in two different counties and am constantly placing books on hold online to read (lol).  I have already read four books this month and plan to read even more.  I have been very intentional about spending less time on social media (which can be hard while running a blog), and more time reading.  I typically read during lunch, when working out (since my foot injury, I have had to give up the elliptical and ride a stationary bike and I will ride for one hour and read), and right before bed. Give it a try!

6. Volunteer
Volunteering always makes me feel great and puts things in perspective.  I love volunteering with animals at local shelters, even though I always want to take them all home!  Find a cause or charity you care about and see how you can help.

7. Pamper Yourself
Gather your mom or girlfriends and treat yourself to a spa day.  You have worked very hard and have to pamper yourself from time to time.  Go get a massage and perhaps a mani/pedi so you will feel relaxed and rejuvenated and ready to tackle the work week like a boss!

Thanks so much for stopping by!  How do you spend your days off?

This Ann Taylor sequin tweed skirt and jacket combo is my favorite winter find.  I found it on major clearance and feel like I hit the jackpot because it looks very luxurious in person.  I love wearing tweed in the winter with black tights and heels for a polished and modern work look.  This outfit is very reminiscent of a Chanel tweed suit, but only a fraction of the price!  I love the jacket and skirt together, but have also worn the individual pieces separately, and paired both with different colors (both pieces look very pretty with white and blush pink).

On a side note, I am finally able to wear heels since my foot injury in October. (I was on crutches for a little over one month and a disgusting orthopedic boot for six weeks).   For the longest time, I couldn't even put a heel on my right foot.  I am still not walking in heels just yet, but my goal is to begin wearing them in February.  I have been wearing a lot of winter boots and sneakers in the meantime, and I don't hate it.  ;-)

Last week, I shared what, in  my opinion, are the Best Work Bags & Totes for the modern-day working woman (see full post here).  For today's post, I wanted to continue to showcase some fashionable professional accessories and share some of my favorite business card holders, which are equally important.  After all, 'it's what's on the inside' (of your bag) that counts, right?  Not to mention, first impressions are everything.  I have several of the above business card cases, and love to rotate them out from time to time to shake things up a bit.  These cases are adorable, and make great gifts for recent graduates, as well as to celebrate a job promotion or landing a first job.  Why not have a little fun and add a little pizzaz to your business cards by carrying them around in one of these chic cases??

Recent Beauty Obsessions: It Cosmetics

It Cosmetics Makeup Brushes
It Cosmetics Makeup Brushes

Ever since being introduced to It Cosmetics at The Blog Societies Conference in August (read all about the conference here), I have used these products religiously and had to share.  It Cosmetics has so many amazing beauty products.  I especially love that their products are cruelty-free.  I swear by the Bye Bye Undereye concealer to hide dark circles underneath my eyes after a late night- it will seriously change your life!  Also, I love the Confidence Cream, and use it as my moisturizer in the mornings.  It is so soft and creamy and does not leave my skin feeling (or looking) oily.   The Complexion Perfect Palette is a staple in my makeup bag.  It includes a pretty pink blush, bronzer, highlighter and setting powder.  I love how pigmented the blush and bronzer are, and use them in my every day makeup routine.

It Cosmetics Makeup Brushes, It Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Makeup Brushes

How pretty are these Heavenly Luxe makeup brushes?  These brushes are the best brushes I have ever owned. They are incredibly soft and blend my makeup seamlessly for a flawless finish.  I cannot recommend It Cosmetics' makeup brushes enough!!

FAVORITE STRUCTURED TOTES:
Best Women's Work Tote Bags and Briefcases
1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

One of the most common questions I get from my lovely readers is what is my favorite work bag.  As a professional working woman and elected official, I am in meetings constantly, and as a result, have a ton to tote around (no pun intended).  I always want to look my best without having to carry around a ton of extra 'stuff', in addition to my tote.  For today's post, I have rounded up some of my favorite work totes and bags, including my newest bag obsession.  I am convinced that every working woman needs this bag (it comes in several pretty colors and sizes and some are on sale).

A structured work bag is an essential if you are always on the go and carry around files and other work-related items day in and day out.  When looking for a work bag or tote, I always look for four common characteristics: shape, shade, structure and size.

A truly versatile bag, a quality tote can serve as your computer and carry-all bag during the work week.  I look for one with durable straps and reinforced handles so that it can carry heavier loads for lengthy periods of time in case I can't go back to my office in between meetings.  I love this gorgeous tote in black and bleecker blush as an every day go-to work tote bag.  I love the spacious interior, and how it is divided into compartments for your computer, coffee mug (or, umbrella), keys, and several other compartments, so that you can stay organized and are less likely to lose your belongings. I love this bag. It is pure genius, not to mention, fashionable and functional and perfect for every #Girlboss.

As far as shape is concerned, I typically opt for a deep squared tote so that I can store away my MacBook Pro and/or iPad without either sticking out.  There is nothing worse than a bulging bag, or for your personal belongings to be on display for a boardroom full of people to see you frantically shuffling around.  No one wants to be known as the "Hot Mess Express".

Also, when looking for a tote, I traditionally stick to neutral colors so that I can pair it with anything (I consider leopard a neutral :-)).  Although, it is nice to have an assortment of colors like the pinks and blues in the above collage to shake things up, or when it is time for a new season.

I hope you found this to be helpful and find a new go-to tote to start the new year off in style!

Cheers to More Traveling in 2017!!

Happy Friday!  What a great (and extremely busy) first week back to work this week has been!  If you read my last post, you know that traveling more is a major goal for 2017.  The above photos are some of my favorites from France and Charleston this past year.  Here's to more traveling in 2017!  So far, Chicago and Italy are on my list of places to go, but I am also hoping to take more weekend get-aways and explore right here in the U.S.!

Happy 2017!!  I cannot believe that 2017 is finally here!!  I am excited about the new year.  2016 was a wonderful year and I achieved a lot of big personal and professional goals.  Probably the biggest accomplishment of 2016 was being elected to public office (read more about my experience here), and transitioning to a new role in the public sector that I am really enjoying (read more about my day-to-day here).  This past year was also full of exciting travels.  I attended my first blogging conference in Charleston (read more here) and met a lot of new blogger gal pals.  Additionally, my brother and I traveled to France, Monaco and Italy (read more here).  I look forward to lots of new adventures, accomplishing even more personal and professional goals, and of course, lots more traveling in 2017!!

Thanks SO much to everyone for taking the time to follow along and for all of your kind comments and emails.  I appreciate you more than you know!  Cheers to a fabulous 2017!!
