What to Wear to Law School, Corporette

Good morning!  It is officially back to school time!  Where did the summer go??  One of the most common questions I get is 'what should I wear to law school?'  As with any law school question, I would say the answer is, "it depends."  Two of the most important things to remember are to be yourself and to dress comfortably.  If you have more of a traditional schedule with classes all day long, I would recommend dressy casual.  For example, you could wear a classic button-down, a blazer or cardigan, a nice pair of jeans and dressy flats.  I went to a night law school, so I (along with most of my classmates) went straight from work and were wearing work clothes.  I think you will find that anything goes.  I would not recommend spending a fortune on an entirely new wardrobe (just to attend classes, that is), because you have just made a major financial commitment with tuition and books.  Instead, save up and invest in timeless nicer pieces for future internships and your first job out of law school.  One more piece of advice, if you want to avoid getting cold-called on, do not wear anything that will draw attention to yourself.  I learned that lesson in my Criminal Law class and started to wear black- and that worked!  ;-)

Thanks so much for stopping by!  Good luck to everyone starting school this fall!

  1. Love this. I followed this rule for Law School orientation this weekend. Dressy casual so what I wear to work on Fridays worked fine. I too will be going to school in the evenings after work and so my work clothes will be what I wear, mostly business dresses and pencil skirts. I love your blog and have been searching through your old law school posts. Thanks!

  2. Great tips! And absolutely right about saving the money for internship and other expenses. A capsule wardrobe will be the best solution!
